Have You Defined the Right Leadership Profile Yet?

Question:

If we are looking for someone who has leadership, what should we pay attention to?

Answer:

We must first create a leadership profile by clearly identifying the needs of the position.

Why This Matters:

"Leadership" can mean different things:

  • Creating new leaders → requires mentoring and development skills

  • Driving team productivity → requires execution and performance management

  • Bridging communication between management and the team → requires strong interpersonal and alignment skills

Each of these reflects a different leadership need. That’s why we cannot evaluate leadership in general terms.

We must first define:

  • What leadership looks like in this role

  • What outcomes we expect the leader to achieve

  • What kind of impact they should create in the team and organization

When evaluating someone for leadership, it's essential to first define what kind of leadership is needed for the specific context or position. Leadership is not a one-size-fits-all concept.

Here's how you can structure this understanding:

Step 1: Define the Leadership Profile

  • What does leadership mean in this context?

  • What outcomes do we expect the leader to achieve?

  • What kind of challenges will this person face?

For example, leadership in a startup may demand agility and innovation, while leadership in a government agency may require stability and process management.

Step 2: Identify Leadership Dimensions

  1. Creating New Leaders (Developing Others)

  2. Driving Team Productivity (Execution Leadership)

  3. Bridging Communication (Translational Leadership)

Each of these points to a different type of leader, with different competencies.

Step 3: Match the Profile to the Need

"All of the above—or one of the above—depending on the leadership need."

There’s no universal right answer unless the context is clear.

Leadership Tip:

Use a Leadership Competency Model. To develop strong leaders, many organizations use structured frameworks like:

Leading Self : Focus on personal effectiveness, emotional intelligence, and integrity.

Leading Others : Build skills in communication, coaching, and team development.

Leading the Business : Drive results, think strategically, and lead innovation.

This model helps align leadership growth with company goals — from first-time managers to senior executives.
